MidAtlantic AIDS Education and Training Center‌The Institute of Human Virology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine is one of nine local performance sites that make up the MidAtlantic AIDS Education and Training Center. Our site offers a variety of educational and clinical training opportunities as well as consultation services, thus serving as a vital resource for area providers.

Our experienced HIV clinicians and clinical education trainers are able to provide the latest information on prevention, treatment and management of HIV disease to a wide variety of audiences.

Clinical Training

Interprofessional Clinical Pathways Certificate:

This session will provide an opportunity to use the core competencies of IPE in a clinical setting. It is required for those students pursuing an HIV IPE Clinical Pathway Certificate. To view a clinical pathway brochure for your specific discipline, please contact Abby Plusen at 410-328-2436.

Clinical Preceptorships:

Providers have the opportunity to train at one of our outpatient HIV clinics or at the IHV's JACQUES Initiative. The goal is to provide a tailored learning experience for providers to improve skills and patient outcomes. Preceptorships offer providers a personalized experience using a combination of hands-on training and direct observation at no cost.

Training and Education Programs:

Clinical Consultation

Case-Based Clinical Consultation:

Individualized clinical consultation to address current issues of HIV positive patients to improve patient outcomes, and provide ongoing clinical support for clinicians. Consultations can be accomplished “on-site” or through distance based technologies.

Clinical Administrative Consultation:

Provisions of clinically-focused consultation with a specific program or agency to assist in improving program performance, efficiency, problem solving, planning, and continuous quality improvement.

Service System Consultation: Provision of ongoing continuous support, resources, and guidance for the HIV care system to improve HIV service delivery, coordination to improve access to quality HIV care.

Technical Assistance

Information Dissemination:

Distribution of the most current, treatment information and research findings from journals, reports, and other publications.

Technical Support:

Provision of technical support through information and linkages to other resources to increase, improve, or expand clinical, support or prevention services.

The Institute of Human Virology’s AIDS Education & Training Center (AETC) is a local performance site of the MidAtlantic AIDS Education Training Center and is designated as one of the federal AIDS Education and Training Centers for Maryland through a subcontract with the University of Pittsburgh. Programs are supported in part by the U.S. Public Health Service HRSA Grant # 5H 4AHA 00060-08-00.

The AETC Program is funded under the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Treatment Modernization Act of 2006 and supports a network of 11 regional training centers. The program conducts targeted, multidisciplinary education and training programs for health care professionals and institutions treating people living with HIV/ AIDS. The MidAtlantic AETC serves the states of Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia as well as the District of Columbia.
